Scientists are worried that a new type of hornet might have moved to North America—putting native honeybees in danger. The Asian giant hornet is normally found in India, China, Japan, and the Korean Peninsula. Last December, Washington State recorded the first-ever evidence of them in the U.S. A few more have been found since then.
These 1.5-inch-long insects deliver 10 times more venom than a honeybee with each sting. The hornets prey on honeybees. Hornets on the attack can destroy a hive in a matter of hours. Officials in Washington State are laying traps to help protect local hives.
